Global Interdependence Youth Summit – Istanbul – 2009

The old aspiration? > Independence.
The new reality : Interdependence.

The Plan

CivWorld’s inaugural Global Interdependence Youth Summit (GIYS) was held this year from September 9 through 13 in Brussels, Belgium and explored the solutions to important worldwide challenges, from the impact of global warming to best practices in conflict prevention. Young people from across the world met for a series of workshops and youth-led discussions and participated in the larger Interdependence Day celebration and forum with some of the world’s greatest scholars, political and civic leaders, policy makers, artists, musicians and thinkers. To see more about 2008 visit www.interdependenceyouthsummit.org

In the near future we’ll be introducing you to our Youth Steering Committee who will help guide our upcoming events and the forthcoming Youth Network.

In 2009 the Youth Summit will make its way to Istanbul Turkey and will emphasize the importance of youth empowerment, participation, and creativity with an objective to chart the ways to turn awareness into accomplishment, vision into action, and learning into leadership - towards making a real difference.

GIYS involves unique and engaging activities that are not based on traditional education methods or focused on a lecture based structure. Instead, it incorporates a variety of informal methods used to maximize participant interaction and ability to contribute. The arts and multimedia platforms, including film and video, play an intrinsic role in documenting and presenting the variety of activities.

The guiding principles of GIYS are:

  • The promotion of interactive participation and empowerment of young people on local and global levels
  • Enhancement of creativity and to provide inspiration for the participants to be agents of change; promotion of civic engagement and civil society
  • Fostering a greater sense of international unity and responsibility
  • Providing unique opportunities for young people to share their views with a wide variety of international leaders, policy figures and academics
  • Creating a safe environment for individual development; to increase self-confidence, improve social skills and networking, and gain valuable knowledge and experience
  • Facilitating intercultural dialogue and understanding, promoting respect for diversity and tolerance for all nationalities, races, religions, and genders.
  • Building a global youth network of support and partnership between participants

www.lblfoundation.org

LBL Foundation for Children is an independent international organization, devoted to investing in education, healing and hope for children, particularly in communities devastated by war. LBL draws on the extensive experience and leadership of its president, Olara A. Otunnu. As UN Under Secretary General and Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict (1997-2005), he spearheaded the international campaign to develop and mobilize international action on behalf of children exposed to war. LBL’s goal is to mobilize and provide support, in the most direct ways possible, to the children and their communities; initially focusing on developing prototypes which can then serve as templates for broader action and engagement. LBL concentrates on supporting communities to recover and rebuild, primarily through the following activities: investing in schools and integrated programs; empowering war-affected youth, through leadership training programs, ‘Voice of Children’ radio programs, and international youth-to-youth networks; drawing international attention to neglected conflict situations, where children are gravely affected; and pressing for full compliance with international protection laws and standards, particularly the enforcement of UN Security Council Resolution 1612 of 2005.

> Institute for Social and European Studies
www.ises.hu

In a complex and globalizing world, regional integration and disintegration, the interfaces and changing relations among old and new players (states, markets, and networks of civil society) need to be recontextualized and redefined. This requires the opening up of traditional disciplines towards each other.
ISES welcomes all those who want to expand their knowledge in the Social Sciences, International Relations and European Studies. Those interested in the study of social and political change, communication, sustainable development, problems of transition, minorities and human rights will find our program challenging and unique.
