Educational Curriculums Adopt Interdependence Themes

Global Campuses – Fall 2003 – Universities and high schools worldwide are beginning to weave the theme of interdependence into their curricula following CivWorld’s call for educational reform.

Pilot courses in political science, international relations, and ethics now emphasize how local issues—such as poverty, climate change, and public health—are tied to global dynamics. “Students need to see the connections,” said Professor Alan Richards, a curriculum developer in Boston. “We cannot prepare future citizens without teaching them the realities of global interdependence.”

Classrooms are also experimenting with new formats, including cross-border video conferences and collaborative research projects with international peers. Early feedback suggests students are energized by seeing their studies linked to pressing global challenges.
