International – September 2003 – From New York to Tokyo, students are launching Interdependence Clubs on campuses to carry forward the spirit of September 12. These student-led groups are designed to create lasting spaces for civic debate, cultural exchange, and grassroots activism.
The clubs grew out of CivWorld’s call for educational institutions to treat global citizenship as essential to civic learning. “We’re not just talking about theory,” explained Maria Gonzalez, a student organizer at the University of Pennsylvania. “Our club is already planning volunteer projects, letter-writing campaigns, and cultural events that show how local action can have global impact.”
Faculty supporters say the clubs could eventually shape new civic curricula. “We’re watching the birth of a movement,” said Professor Harold Jenkins. “These students are turning interdependence from an idea into practice.”
