Philadelphia Gears Up for Civic Celebration on September 12

Philadelphia, PA – September 10, 2003 – The birthplace of American democracy is preparing for a new kind of civic milestone: the inaugural Interdependence Day. Set for September 12, the event will bring together scholars, activists, artists, and students for a citywide celebration of global connectedness.

Workshops, musical performances, and public forums are scheduled across the city, with Independence Hall serving as a symbolic backdrop. “Philadelphia has always stood for liberty and democratic ideals,” said Dr. Benjamin Barber, one of the event’s founders. “Now it stands for interdependence—the idea that in our global age, freedom and security cannot be achieved alone.”

Local schools and universities have also joined in, incorporating interdependence-themed lessons and hosting debates. City officials voiced their support, noting that Philadelphia’s role in drafting the Declaration of Independence makes it an ideal stage for unveiling its 21st-century counterpart: the Declaration of Interdependence.
